OSWEGO – Oswego City School District Board of Education, their fortnightly meeting last night, April 18, 2023, with all members present. The meeting was short.
> Several attendees spoke during the plenary session, including one named Christine, who wondered how long it would take to select a new moderator. Board Chair Dr. Lisa Glidden noted in her response that the timeline, much shorter than the time period used to select previous superintendent Dr. Mattis Calvin III, was created to try to ensure a new superintendent at the start of the 2023-2024 academic year.
In the superintendent’s report, interim OCSD superintendent Jeffrey Gordon listed several events, including the upcoming weekend All County Choir Festival, which will be held at Pulaski Academy and the Central Middle/Senior School Building. Gordon also mentioned a board meeting scheduled for 9:00 am on Wednesday, April 26 to vote on the CITI BOCES Budget and the BOCES Board of Directors. This meeting will be held at the Education Center.
After the board passes all of the items in the approval schedule, Gordon explains a change in the school’s schedule, stating that because the high school took more snow days than the allotted due to the use of an emergency burst pipe, only students at the high school would report to the school. for a half day on May 5, 2023. The second half of the day will be made up by the half day staff on May 26, 2023.
All items of the personnel table were passed unanimously. All items on the financial agenda have been passed; With the Council then holding a roll call vote to approve the 2033-2024 budget. Board member Pamela Dodd commented that the figure was higher than she would have liked to see, and that although state aid is somewhat unpredictable, the current slow but steady rise is “unsustainable”.
After listing several potential challenges to the future of OCSD’s finances, Board Member Dr. James McKenzie said, “I support this budget exactly as it is.” The provision passed with board member Schön Unmacht voting against the measure.
Speaking before the board, student representative Maura Dempsey spoke in positive terms regarding the recent celebrations of the high school’s Spirit Week; It also announces several upcoming sporting events.
