The climate crisis is a children’s education crisis. Severe weather events destroy or damage schools, educational materials, and critical infrastructure, making it difficult for children to continue learning. Multiple indirect effects on children’s education, including increased risks of malnutrition, disruption of livelihoods, and negative health effects, prevent children from attending school. Without immediate action to address climate change, the global learning crisis is likely to intensify; In the same vein, quality education can actually support climate action by strengthening the resilience of students and their communities to adapt and respond to climate change.

On April 13, the Center for Global Education (CUE) and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) will co-host an event at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. to help advance climate change discourse and the education relationship. At the event, the Global Partnership for Education will launch the Climate Smart Education Systems Framework, which sets out a concrete agenda to enhance the resilience and relevance of education to climate change and environmental degradation. By channeling diverse voices on the topic—including youth leaders, the Minister of Education, other policymakers, and civil society organizations—the event seeks to foster a rich, inclusive conversation that not only brings each dimension of the framework to life, but also inspires new ideas and approaches. To build climate smart school systems. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers during each conversation, and there will be time for networking and coffee in the half hour leading up to the event.

This event will be available to attend in person or to view online. Online viewers can email questions to [email protected] or via Twitter at #ClimateSmartEd.
