Philadelphia hosts a job fair with hundreds of opportunities for teens

City says 7,000 summer jobs are available for Boston youth ages 14 to 18

On a beautiful spring day, the scent of opportunity was in the air for teens like Typhoon Tucker.

“It’s a great event. I feel like they should do it more,” said Tucker. “There are good opportunities for everyone.”

Held by Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and Dell Music Center, the event gets applicants as far as an on-site interview with hundreds of openers.

The Philadelphia Youth Network has plenty of summer camp opportunities for young adults, said Marissa Washington, deputy commissioner of Philadelphia Parks and Recreation.

The minimum wage in Pennsylvania is $7.25 for a PYN. [Philadelphia Youth Network]Young people can earn $11 and more, Washington said. It’s a great opportunity for them to put a little cash in their pockets, as it will also keep them busy and do something positive for the summer.

Desiree Neal was encouraged to see all the young people attending the event, including her daughter.

“I remember the craving of growing up calling it my new Philly,” Neil said. “This is new Philly, she’s crying out for help with mental health. She’s crying out for love. She’s crying out for kids and parents for spending time together. She’s crying out for opportunity.”

There is a significant employment gap in the city’s swimming pools. They are looking to hire about 160 lifeguards and about 200 pool maintainers.

“I’m really a lifesaver because I love swimming. I love helping people,” Brill Canaday said.

Bonus lifeguard positions are available to anyone 16 and older, while pool maintenance supervisors are available to anyone 18 or older.

They offer rewards and they will train,” said Alexander Hughes Taylor, acting coordinator of aquaria for Philadelphia Parks and Rec.

“They’ll take you out on the water. Rate where you are and we’ll let you know and bring you back every day or whatever your available schedule is to get you to a point where you can pass the lifeguard check test.”
