New guidance for teachers and parents and student information will help students better understand consent and prevent gender-based violence in BC schools.

The Ministry of Education and Child Care has released updated health guidelines and educational resources from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

“Schools have a vital role to play in helping students learn about healthy sexuality and the importance of consent in all areas of their lives,” said Education and Child Care Minister Jennifer Whiteside. They provide more tools to do so.This is an important step in doing our part to prevent sexual abuse and non-consensual behavior in schools and outside of school, and our government is committed to improving how students learn about consent.

The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Child Care have revised two teaching guidelines, one for primary and one for secondary schools, in consultation with students, parents and teachers. The guidelines include information about consent and examples of how teachers can best include lessons on consent in the classroom that are appropriate for the student’s age range.

In elementary school, the guidelines suggest that teachers integrate discussions about permission into regular interactions with students, such as asking a friend for permission before giving them a hug. As students reach middle school, the guide provides examples of how teachers can help them identify risky behaviors in relationships. These lessons are designed to give students a better understanding of how to establish healthy boundaries and body autonomy in all areas of their lives and relationships.

“What students, parents and advocates told us during our consultation on the Gender-Based Violence Action Plan was the importance of age-appropriate information and education for students about consent, healthy friendships and relationships,” said Grace Lorre. Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equality. We need to formalize leave as part of our daily lives and support teachers.

Beginning in 2023, the district will offer additional learning sessions for parents and students about consent, online safety and healthy relationships through Safe Schools.

The district is updating the state’s ERISE (Respect and Safe Education) website to ensure reliable information and resources are available to students, parents and teachers. We are working with school districts to ensure that all students, including students in 11th and 12th grades, have access to charter education at school.

“We are pleased to see the district take this important step to provide more guidance about consent education in the classroom,” said Chris Schultz-Lorentsen, president of the Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils. “Learning about consent is critical for our students to develop healthy relationships. I want to thank the SD71 (Comox) District Parent Advisory Council and parents throughout the district for their efforts to raise awareness about sexual assault and harassment. Seeing the province’s move to provide more training and resources to parents, from Education We look forward to working with the Ministry and Child Care on this important issue.

SD71 District Parent Advisory Council Chair Jennifer Fisher said, “We are pleased to see the ministry working with our education partners and subject matter experts to bring consensus education into K-12 classrooms and implement other measures to educate students. Responding to sexual assault and harassment.

Teaching Consent in Kindergarten through Grade 12 is part of a multi-year action plan to end gender-based violence.
