The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a new Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) through the Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analysis (CFA) to establish a disease prediction response network to support decision makers during public health emergencies.
NOFO will establish a new program through the Honors Agreement to support state and local decision makers in developing and implementing new analytical tools appropriate for their state based on the best available data. The program works with private sector, academic and judicial partners to support building and expanding the skills needed to effectively respond to public health emergencies before and during emergencies. With these additional capabilities, our communities can more effectively use data to identify, respond to, and mitigate public health emergencies. Like our ability to predict the severity and landfall of hurricanes, this network will allow us to better predict the trajectory of future outbreaks, empowering response leaders to have data and information when they need it most.
“Infectious disease outbreaks have and will continue to threaten our communities, friends and families,” said Dylan George, director of the CDC’s Center for Epidemic Forecasting and Analysis. “This network will enhance our national capacity to use disease models, analysis, and forecasting to support public health actions, prevent disease, protect people, and protect the economy. The network will provide vital tools to quickly and effectively fight outbreaks in our critical response communities.”
The new program supports advanced modeling, forecasting tools, and epidemic analysis through three critical steps: innovation, integration, and implementation. Funding recipients will work with CFA to establish a national network to support judicial decision makers in future public health emergencies. In addition, the cooperative agreement provides funding for recipients to plan, prepare, and respond to future infectious diseases.
The Innovation Unit helps develop new analytical methods, tools, or modeling efforts that ultimately inform public health decision makers.
The integration component will take the most promising approaches from the innovation pipeline and pilot test one or two approaches at the state, local, tribal, or regional level to measure the technique’s success in practical application by public health decision makers.
The third component, implementation, takes successful pilot projects and makes them available for use in all regions. The goal is to have new, effective analytical tools and approaches for deployment at the local level where critical public health interventions are carried out.
