The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is looking to hire hundreds of people to fill a variety of positions.
A recent report showed that staffing levels are 20 to 25 percent below what is needed to maintain the system.
“As we have all seen in the media, the MBTA has many opportunities,” said MBTA Personnel Director Gil Alzate. “Professional-level jobs within our environmental groups, attorneys, nurses, paramedics, accountants, and human resources staff like me, but our greatest need is our frontline workforce.” Alzate said they are working to fill hundreds of bus driver jobs.
“We are looking for 300 bus operators every year for the next five years,” said Al-Zati. “There are so many opportunities for people to come and start a great career in the MBTA.” No previous experience is necessary, Alzate said, and the MBTA will pay for all training and certification. “As long as you come to us eager to work, we’ll hire you, pay for your CDL permit, and put you on the payroll until you’re sitting in a classroom and getting paid,” Alzate said. “We’ll pay for all of your training, we’ll pay for your licenses and get you on the path to starting a great career.”
The MBTA hosts career fairs on the next several Saturdays.
“This intrigues me because I love serving people,” said Zachary Gosby, of Taunton. “I wanted to come see what it was all about. I know some people who work at the MBTA and they are very happy.”
With recent changes in leadership and the quest for improvement, recruiters argue now is an exciting time to join the MBTA.
“We are injecting a fresh, new perspective into the organization,” said Al-Zati. “We recognize where we’ve come from and we’re challenging ourselves to make a cultural shift so that in order to move the Commonwealth forward, we need to build a better T and that starts with our people.”
