Halifax, Nova Scotia, April 14, 2023– (working wire) – School support staff represented by the Nova Scotia School Board Unions Council of CUPE (NSSBCU) will hold pickets and rallies around the province on Saturday, April 15y. Education workers will be in legal strike mode at 12:01 a.m. on April 21street.
5,400 education workers voted 97.5% in favor of striking if an agreement guaranteeing large pay increases for members is not reached. CUPE education workers are among the lowest paid workers in the public sector, with the majority earning less than $30,000 per year. The NSSBCU applied for reconciliation in January in hopes that a third party would help refocus the government on finalizing a fair deal that would help members escape poverty, but reconciliation talks failed, and both parties received reports from conciliation officials on April 6.y.
NSSBCU represents more than 5,400 school support staff across all seven regional centers of education and the Conseil scolaire acadien county. Members include bus drivers, pre-primary early childhood educators, educational program assistants, guardians, food service personnel, and merchants.
The heads of the 8 local residents involved will be available for comment on Saturday. Gathering locations and contact details for local representatives are listed below.
