FEMA has awarded $2.8 billion to eligible applicants for Covid-19 funeral assistance.

If you are covering the cost of a Covid-19 funeral, FEMA can help.

You may qualify for up to $9,000 per funeral in expenses.

Who is eligible?

FEMA may provide you with COVID-19 funeral assistance if:

  • You are a US citizen, noncitizen, or ineligible citizen.
  • The death occurred in the United States, including the US states and the District of Columbia;
  • Death was due to covid-19. And
  • In the year You will be responsible for eligible funeral expenses on or after January 20, 2020

What is covered?

FEMA may approve COVID-19 funeral assistance for expenses such as:

  • Funeral services
  • Cremation
  • Intervention
  • Expenses related to the preparation of death certificates
  • Costs due to local or state government laws or regulations
  • Transportation of up to two people to identify the dead person
  • transfer of residues
  • Box or bag
  • Cemetery
  • A marker or headstone
  • Priests.
  • Funeral ceremony
  • Funeral home equipment or staff

What is needed?

US states and the District of Columbia You must provide FEMA with an official death certificate showing that the death occurred in the United States after January 20, 2020 and was caused by COVID-19.

If the death certificate was issued between January 20 and May 16, 2020, either 1) the death was directly or indirectly caused by COVID-19, or 2) a signed statement from the original death certificate, or listing COVID-19 as the cause or cause of death, from the jurisdiction where the death occurred. A medical examiner or investigator in This signed statement must provide additional explanation or causation to link the cause of death listed on the death certificate to COVID-19.

You must provide FEMA with a signed funeral home contract, invoice, receipt, or other document that includes:

  • Your name indicates that you are responsible for some or all of the expenses
  • The name of the deceased
  • Detailed expenses
  • Proof that the expenses were incurred on or after January 20, 2020

How does it work?

  1. To apply, call 844-684-6333 toll-free, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. FEMA representatives will take your application, and multilingual services are available. Applications for COVID-19 funeral assistance must be completed with a FEMA representative. You cannot apply online. It takes about 20 minutes to apply and you must provide the following:
    • Your social security number and date of birth
    • The deceased person’s social security number and date of birth
    • Your current postal address and telephone number
    • The address where the person died
    • If the deceased has a funeral or burial insurance policy
    • If you receive other funeral assistance (such as donations, CARES Act assistance, state/territorial assistance, or assistance from voluntary organizations)
    • If you want eligible funds to be sent by direct deposit, your checking or savings account transfer and account number.
  2. After you apply, FEMA will give you an application number, and you can create an account on it. DisasterAssistance.gov.
  3. You must submit supporting documents (eg, funeral home contract, invoices, receipts, death certificate) by:
    • Upload to you DisasterAssistance.gov Account
    • Fax to 855-261-3452
    • Letter To: PO Box 10001, Hyattsville, MD 20782.
  4. Once FEMA receives all necessary documents, it will take approximately 45 days to make an eligibility determination.
  5. If FEMA approves your application for COVID-19 funeral assistance, funds will be deposited into your bank account or mailed in the form of a Treasury check, depending on the choice you made during your application. Funds usually arrive within a few days of approval, and you will receive a notification letter.
