Covered Bridge Fall Assistance Engineer Office | News, sports, jobs

City says 7,000 summer jobs are available for Boston youth ages 14 to 18

Newton Falls – The Trumbull County Engineer’s Office is assisting the village in obtaining repairs and improvements to the historic closed covered bridge.

Steve Papalas of the engineer’s office told officials Wednesday that after discussions about repairing the bridge and putting the project up for bids, an offer of $762,000 was received, which will be covered by insurance.

He said that the project was put out for bids twice, with no bids received the first time. The project was re-introduced, with $762,000 being the lowest.

There has been a problem with high water levels below the bridge but Papalas said crews will work on the bridge in June.

It is a historic bridge. The county does not have many covered bridges. He said.

The bridge was closed for several years after it was damaged when a car traveling on it slammed into the sides.

The Newton Falls Covered Bridge connects Bridge Street to Arlington Road and crosses one branch of the Mahoning River that crosses Newton Falls.

Built in 1831, the bridge still accommodates cars over the East Branch of the river.

Officials said the bridge is the second oldest covered bridge in the state, the only bridge in Ohio with a covered walkway, and the last covered bridge in Trumbull County.
