The secret to writing the perfect CV can lie in it chat.
Since its launch in November, more job seekers have used the AI-powered chatbot to help write cover letters, edit resumes, and craft responses to predictable interview questions.
Among more than 1,000 current and recent job seekers surveyed at ResumeBuilder.com reconnaissance In the last month, nearly half (46%) reported using ChatGPT to write their resume or cover letter.
Of those candidates, 70% said they saw a higher response rate to their applications when they submitted an AI-generated resume than a non-AI-driven resume, and 59% were hired.
Advanced AI capabilities allow ChatGPT to generate pithy, human-like sentences in seconds – and it’s free. You can ask the chatbot to write a custom resume based on the job description and it will produce a near-complete document that is missing a few key details, such as your name and address.
While some hiring managers warn that ChatGPT can encourage candidates to lie about their skills and experience, others say that a chatbot, if used properly, can help candidates craft a solid resume and stand out in the hiring process.
At this point, ChatGPT is “essentially undetectable” by most recruiters and hiring managers, says Ian Siegel, CEO of ZipRecruiter — and it’s not a tool he expects job seekers to be penalized for using either, so long as ChatGPT doesn’t do 100%. from work.
“Job seekers have used other AI tools like Grammarly to correct spelling, style, and punctuation on their resumes for years without problems,” he adds. “ChatGPT is really no different.”
At a minimum, a chatbot can help you pass an applicant tracking system’s initial screening or a human observer who spends mere seconds scanning your resume, says Siegel. In the best-case scenario, he adds, ChatGPT can provide specific examples or suggestions for paraphrasing your experience and skills, giving you an “unusual advantage”.
However, it’s important to combine chatbot edits with your own editing and audio, and triple-check that the resume you create accurately reflects your experience.
“You can’t completely rely on ChatGPT, there has to be an element of mistrust to make sure you’re getting good information,” says Steve Knox, vice president of global talent acquisition at HR software company Ceridian.
If you’re building a resume from scratch, ChatGPT can help you create a custom template.
Juan Pablo Gonzalez, a senior client partner at global consulting firm Korn Ferry, recommends finding a couple of examples of resume formats you like, uploading them to ChatGPT and asking the bot to create a resume format for you based on the examples you provide.
Or, if you have an updated LinkedIn profile, you can share a link with ChatGPT and have the bot create a resume for you based on the information in your profile, which should give you a “serviceable first draft,” says Gonzalez.
“The biggest challenge people have when writing their resume is organizing all the information into a clear structure, and keeping the most important information on one page,” says Gonzalez. “ChatGPT can give you clear recommendations for exactly how to do this… all you have to do is check and edit as needed.”
Once you have a solid draft of your resume, you can ask ChatGPT a number of prompts to edit your bullet points and make sure you include all the information and keywords that potential employers are looking for.
“ChatGPT will give you better and smarter visibility when you give it personal information to work with, and use it to match your resume to the job you’re interested in,” says Knox.
Here are specific prompts you can ask ChatGPT to improve your resume:
- “I will send you a job description and resume. Can you improve my resume for this job?”
- Write points of appeal for [insert job title here] and include metric-based achievements.”
- “I will send you a job description. What are the keywords [insert job title here] in [insert company name here]? ”
A growing number of career coaches are sharing ChatGPT resume editing tutorials on TikTok — some with a million views and counting — including Madelyn Machado, a career strategist and reverse recruiter. she People advise To try the following prompt: “Can you create a resume for [insert job title here] With measurable results tailored to this job description? Then, you can compare the results that ChatGPT produces with your resume, and adjust accordingly.
Machado concludes that ChatGPT is the “ultimate resume writing cheat code”.
