Best Buy is cutting store jobs across the US as the electronics retailer looks to cut costs and shift its business toward e-commerce, The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the situation.
The layoffs will affect hundreds of jobs at Best Buy stores in the United States, the report said, adding that laid-off employees can, however, re-apply for open positions within the company or receive a termination.
This week, the report added, many store workers who specialize in selling more complex products such as computers and smartphones have been told their jobs will be cut.
“As we shared last month, we’re evolving our stores and the experiences we offer to better reflect changes in customer shopping behavior, as well as how our teams are organized,” said Best Buy.
As of January, Best Buy had more than 90,000 employees in the United States and Canada, including about 58% full-time employees, 32% part-time workers, and 10% seasonal employees.
